Individually Customized Safety Goggles

This project used scanned data from human heads to create personalized, comfortable safety goggles. By considering unique head contours, the project aimed to provide superior comfort and protection, further enhanced by innovative materials and design techniques.

Research

Safety goggles are a crucial component of PPE in workshop settings, shielding the eyes from potential hazards such as flying debris and other impacts, dust, and chemicals.

Despite their importance, today’s safety goggles have several limitations. Safety glasses are made with a one-size-fits-all approach which doesn’t take people’s difference in facial structure in account. A mismatch between your facial structure and the standardized glasses can lead to discomfort and increased risk of injuries.

Fogging of the glasses is also a common problem, often due to lack of adequate ventilation, which can increase to risk of injury.

Wearing prescription eyeglasses beneath safety goggles can also lead to increased pressure and discomfort, or even making impossible to wear the prescription eyewear at all – leading to decreased visibility for the user.

Concept Creation

Concept – Meshflow

Meshflow safety goggles, prioritizes comfort, safety, visibility, and compatibility with other PPE. Using 3D scanned data.

Meshflow goggles fits each individual’s unique head shape and size, maximizing surface contact to minimize pressure and distribute impact forces. The 3D-printed TPU mesh structure provides impact damping and ventilation preventing fogging and regulating temperature.

The design accommodates spectacle wearers with dedicated space for glasses, and an elastic strap ensures a secure fit, comfortable over prescription glasses and under helmets.
